10 songs of winter

"Baby, It's Cold Outside," Dean Martin. One man's extended battle against frigid conditions.

"Wintertime Love," the Doors. When the mercury plunges, there's safety in numbers. "Come with me, dance, my dear/Winter's so cold this year."

"Charlie Freak," Steely Dan. Luckless Charlie, shivering without shelter, sells a gold ring but spends his earnings unwisely. The ring returns to him, but only after he's dead. What you call "cold comfort."

"California Dreamin'," the Mamas & the Papas. Suggestion for beating the sleet: Go to L.A., or go to church.

"Winter," the Rolling Stones. A man burns his "bell, book and candle," but finds it produces insufficient heat.

"La bohème," Puccini, Act I: In a freezing apartment, an unpublished author sings about creating warmth by burning his manuscript. Call it the Kindle version.

"Love, Please Close the Door," Earth and Fire. Good advice when "a cold wind moans and chases the clouds/Carrying along their snow." Check those windows, too.

"Winter Song," the Kinks. A chilly man chases the cold by "running down icy streets trying to catch sunbeams." (The song was written in London, where central heating remains experimental.)

"Christmas Eve," Rimsky-Korsakov. When the devil creates a hellish snowstorm, the solution is saffron booze.

"Don't Eat the Yellow Snow," Frank Zappa. Indispensable winter advice.
